for violating the clean water act. >>> we have some pretty stunning new video of hurricane sandy's assault on new york and new jersey. surveillance video shows a transit station in hoboken, new jersey, being flooded by torrents of water gushing from an elevator shaft. train service is still disrupted because of the storm. president obama, yesterday, paid his first visit to new york city since sandy hit and got a firsthand look at destruction on staten island, met with storm victims there and praised new yorkers for their toughness and resilience. >> half of the fatalities in the new york city area happened on staten island. they were really devastated. deadline issued to striking hostess workers has come and gone. and so far nobody is budging. >> that's it. hostess told employees if they did not get back to work by 5:00 p.m. eastern last night the company would move to shut its doors for good. the picket lines are still up. hostess says it will announce its next move later this morning. so, meantime, we are just left to savor, all of the goodness from hostess. what are these? obviously. tw
hurricane sandy slammed into the east coast, president obama heads into the damaged zone for a second time. today he will visit staten island to evaluate recovery efforts there. it's his first visit to sandy's impact zone in about two weeks when the president toured parts of new jersey with governor chris christie. >>> and the president's visit comes as two of the biggest utility companies face investigation into how well they prepared and responded to superstorm sandy. con edison and long island power both received subpoenas yesterday requesting records on restoring power and communicating with customers. the storm left 2 million in new york in the dark for days. some still don't have their powerback. >>> one family found dozens of touching displays of love on the beach. the pack of love letters was soaking wet with had the family found them. after drying them out, they read the letters from a young woman to her boyfriend. >> i want to return them to whoever they belong to. they're so beautiful. she must have adored him. i love you, dear, and miss you very much. all my love always, dotty.

. thanks very much. >>> hundreds of thousands of homes torn apart by superstorm sandy. as people start to rebuild, are insurance companies trying to help? or are they just trying to help themselves? >>> the price tag for superstorm sandy is growing. officials in new york state and new jersey say they'll need more than $70 billion to recover. in some ways the property devastation was worse than hurricanes katrina and rita combined. in some ways. in new york state alone sandy destroyed more than 300,000 homes. that's a lot of homes that have to be rebuilt. and as cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick discovered, it means a lot of homeowners are looking for answers. >> reporter: when superstorm sandy hit, peggy thought she was ready. she paid decades worth of insurance premiums to be covered for catastrophe. so this is the letter basically denying -- >> i went to the office and this is what they gave me. >> reporter: she says her claim was denied. her deluxe homeowners policy covered hurricane and wind, not floods. >> she said you're not entitled to anything. you don't have flood

. that was the deal before hurricane sandy. i'm sorry to tell you these trusty tracks with the families and the surfers and the commuting pigeons, they got washed out last month by hurricane sandy. the storm surge swamped the tracks and twisted them and they are not expected to get fixed for many, many long months, which means tens of thousands of people are logistically stuck out there in the rockaways. lots of them still without power and heat. the rockaways are not an island, but for people out there, that's how life is being lived right now. after the storm, the rockaways got so hard to reach, some bicyclists pedals in supplies, partly because with gas supplies short, biking still worked. believe it or not, the u.s. navy made an amphibious landing a couple weeks ago because that was the best way to bring in equipment. just pull up to the beach and o go. today we got some news. the folks that run the subway system just posted this video. look at that. the city has trucked in 20 subway cars for the rockaway side of the busted tracks. they did this four nights running, bringing in the

for the second time since hurricane sandy blasted through this region. the president remarking, of course, on the first responders, praising them. many of those people on the ground right now, even though their homes at wunt point in time had no power and even in some cases their homes were destroyed. the president met privately with damien and glenda moore. they're the parents of two small children swept away the night that sandy roared through. the mother got out of the vehicle trying to get help, and while she was beating on doors asking for help, her children were swept away and the president met privately with that family, just one of over 100 people who are grieving because they lost a loved one in this storm. right now we know that thousands or tens of thousands are homeless and thousands are still without power in the region. interestingly enough, the president also noted that hud secretary shean donovan would be in charge of the federal response in rebuilding communities. he noted fema is on the ground there for recovery, but so many want to know the rebuilding plan that would be
